Personal Statement
In order to fulfilling my dream and preparing for my work career, my target of studying abroad Is to accept the professional courses' trailing. And the program of management or some other subjects In business school would be my first choice. There are three advantages for me to study Management. First of all, character of Hard-working, the higher learning ability, and the strong interest of study made me ready for studying abroad. In undergraduate, I wonderfully complete my own professional courses.In addition, I have read many business books which I put this knowledge into practice. When I was a sophomore, I had applied for the national innovation project of College students. Under the teacher's guidance, we determined ââ¬Å"Human foreign language environment's influence of international imageâ⬠as project's title. In the three months of study, I show my diligent and the project supervisor appointed me as the project manager who should gear of solid bilingual foundation, exper ience In translation, and contrastive study of English and Chinese language.In this project, we mainly reviewed the English signs and Instructions In public places. And we made our efforts to Improve the city engage environment, enhance city image and grade. Second, in order to prepare for the postgraduate study in business courses, I deliberately practice my communication skills, leadership ability and team cooperation ability in some social practices. In freshman summer vacation, I have returned to my hometown.With local friends, we organized a college student's voluntary teaching program, hoping it could enrich the students' summer life through this activity, also wanting to try our ability to help local children. Images are a huge part of todays world and in my eyes has the greatest potential to document the factual or express the imaginary. Data communications and neetworks Essay
What is signalling? Signalling is a term used for the use of data being transmitted or carried across a medium for example in a network this could be a cat 5 cable. There has to be a way also for the receiver to interpret the data being sent and this is controlled by whatââ¬â¢s called ââ¬Å"encodingâ⬠however the word ââ¬Å"modulationâ⬠also means the same thing. The signal that is sent it modified in a way for it to signify data. There are different types of transmission methods which differ from what type of medium you are using for example cables or wireless ââ¬â there are four which are listed below: 1. Electrical ââ¬â uses your cables to transport data between nodes 2. Radio Waves ââ¬â this would be your wireless networks and could also include Bluetooth devices. 3. Light ââ¬â this would use fibre optic cabling to send high speeds of data 4. Microwave Analogue & Digital Signalling There are two different types of signalling and these can be done in Analogue which means it changes all time in both amplitude and frequency. For example an analogue clock which has its hands moving all the time is changing the time all the time. Whereas with digital signalling which are representations of discrete time signals. For example a digital clock shows the minutes and not the seconds. When the information is being sent over a network when communicating, the information can travel in two forms, these are analogue and digital. The difference between the two is simple that analogue signalling never stops, and the information is being sent continuously, a good example of this signalling is clocks. An analogue clock will never stop, as the second hand is always ticking, therefore one can record an accurate reading of the time to the second, or even millisecond. For example, 1 hour 15 minutes and 24 seconds. Appose this to digital signalling where one can not get an accurate reading of a clock as it will only show the minutes. And therefore is not continuous. This is because the data is consisting of separate states, which are on or off. Sine Wave This type of wave has two properties a Amplitude & Frequency, the amplitude represents the strength of the signal which would be the volume of a sound for example somebody talking. If the amplitude is stronger than it will travel further. The frequency of a Sine Wave is the rise and fall of the wave from the zero to the top and then back to the zero ââ¬â this is known as a cycle and is measured in Hz. The higher frequency the more cycles and therefore the lower the frequency the lower the cycles. A good example of this would be a user using a keyboard attached to a computer. The characters are sent irregularly however the bits must be sent at known intervals. This is done by having accurate clocks at both ends of the link. The receiving clock starts when it receives the first bit from the transmitter, this is also known as the start bit. The receiver then expects to receive a known number of bits every tick of the clock. When it has received these bits the clock may stop; the last bit is known as the stop bit. Synchronous Transmission However when large volumes of data are to be transferred, the waste of the stop and stop bits with every character means that asynchronous transmission is not an efficient method. With high-speed devices, and buffered low-speed devices, data can be transmitted in large, timed, synchronous blocks. The clocks, in the receiver and transmitter, are kept synchronised by sending regular groups of special characters called SYN characters. Each time one of these groups is detected the receiver re-sets its clock, the data apart from this, itââ¬â¢s transmitted in exactly the same way as for asynchronous transmission. We can visualise the data as follows: Bit Synchronisation In a digital signal, as well as on occasion, an analogue one, all the different devices must know how often the signal varies along the transmission medium. For example, if the speed of the changes goes faster then the rate at which the device checks for changes, there will be a few of the bits missed between samples. If then sampling rate goes faster then the rate at which the transmission goes, the same bit will be used for a different sample a second time. To combat this fact, the devices are made to a universal standard so that they can work together in harmony, and there are set systems in place to allow the data to be transferred correctly. A lot of the current technologies use asynchronous serial transmission. This transmission method is used when data is not sent at regular intervals, but the bits themselves have to be sent with regularity, some examples of these are keyboard, mice or even modems. During the spans of time that no signal is sent, the line or other medium is in what is called an idle state. This is defined by the constant 1 signal being sent. One there is a packet of data that needs to be sent, for example, a key on the keyboard is pressed, the receiver first gets a start bit, a 0 state instead of a 1 to define the beginning of a piece of data now being sent to the receiver, it is then sampled and at the end of the data transmission, the signal returns to the original constant 1 state. Encoding Methods Encoding simply means that the information is converted from one format to another format. This is a process that the data needs to have done to it before the computer can understand it and process it. There are different types of encoding which are à Manchester Encoding is a data communications line code which provides a way of encoding binary data sequences. Each bit is related to by at least one voltage level transition. Manchester encoding is said to be self clocking this means that synchronisation of a data stream is possible. Huffman Encoding is another algorithm used for data compression; the coding uses a specific method for choosing the representation for each symbol. Unipolar Encoding This type of encoding has 2 voltage states, one of these states is zero and because of this its also know as Return to Zero (RTZ) Unipolar encoding is used in computers & logic and an example of where its used in computers is the TTL logic. Polar Encoding Polar encoding is when the digital encoding is on a level with zero volts for example the RS232 standard interface uses Polar encoding and unlike Unipolar the value doesnââ¬â¢t return to zero, its either a positive or negative voltage. With polar encoding it reduces most of the residual DC problem.

Critical Analysis and Research on Sylvia Plathââ¬â¢s poems Essay
The literary tradition Plath is most closely associated with: Confessionalism, engenders robust biographical interpretation due to the innately self-revelatory idiom. Plath, even more so than other Confessional poets like Anne Sexton or Robert Lowell, explored the poetic possibilities of contemporaneous self-expression which involved intimate, sometimes deeply personal psychological and biographical revelation. This aspect, along with deftly executed figurative language, expressive and interesting prosody, and stark, often violent imagery distinguishes the poems of Plathââ¬â¢s most well-known book of verse ââ¬Å"Ariel. â⬠Plathââ¬â¢s most famous poem ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠enjoys myriad biographical interpretations, an understanding of which are as necessary as understanding the poemââ¬â¢s other dimensions: prosody, rhyme, image, and theme for a thorough reading of the poem. Interestingly, Plath her self noted, in a reading for the BBC, that ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠was ââ¬Å"spoken by a girl with an Electra complex. Her father died while she thought he was God. Her case is complicated by the fact that her father was also a Nazi and her mother very possibly part Jewish. â⬠(Plath, Nos. 166-188). These words express Plathââ¬â¢s attempt to pace a narrative distance between herself and the speaker of the poem and seem to indicate that she felt such a distinction failed to be strongly apparent in the poem itself. This latter conclusion is understandable; close inspection of Plathââ¬â¢s diary, biographies, and the lines of ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠exhume a potent parallels between the events described in the poem and the events of Plathââ¬â¢s life. Beginning with the most obvious parallel as well as the poemââ¬â¢s central theme of a ââ¬Å"girl with an Electra complex,â⬠Plathââ¬â¢s journals reveal that she, indeed, suffered personally from an ââ¬Å"Electra complex. â⬠While undergoing treatment with her psychologist Dr. Ruth Beuscher, Plath experienced a cathartic emotional climax during psychotherapy and recorded her subsequent Sylvia Plathââ¬â¢s Poems Page -2- thoughts. Plath also noted that her father was an ââ¬Å"ogreâ⬠and ââ¬Å"tyrantâ⬠and that he kept a hidden Nazi flag in his closet which he occasionally paraded in front of while dressed in Nazi regalia. ââ¬Å"He wouldnââ¬â¢t go to a doctor, wouldnââ¬â¢t believe in God and heiled Hitler in the privacy of his home. â⬠Of her mother Plath observed, ââ¬Å"She suffered{â⬠¦ } bound to the track naked and the train called Life coming with a frown and a choo-choo around the bend. â⬠(Plath Journal, 430) This latter turn of phrase (with its train imagery) informs the imagery of Daddy when Plath writes: ââ¬Å"An engine, an engine/ Chuffing me off like a Jew. â⬠Likewise, the Nazi imagery of ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠conveys a sense of bleakest hopelessness, with Plath directly identifying her own childhood pain and loss of her father with the persecution of the Jews by the Nazis. ââ¬Å"I have always been scared of you/ With your Luftwaffe, your gobbledygoo. / And your neat mustache/And your Arayan eye, bright blue. â⬠Although the poem expresses the dramatic revelation of an ââ¬Å"Electra complex,â⬠the poemââ¬â¢s opening lines foreshadow a strange inversion of powers; the admonition ââ¬Å"You do not do, you do not do/ Any more, black shoeâ⬠portends or infers that the speaker has won a victory over her oppressor (s); taken at their full impact, the opening lines convey not only a release from the familial neurosis implied by the aforementioned biographical details, but a sinister hint at the poemââ¬â¢s ultimately suicidal themes. The line ââ¬Å"in which I have lived like a foot/For thirty years, poor and whiteâ⬠mean to strike to the heart of the poetââ¬â¢s entire life and not merely the ââ¬Å"Electra complexâ⬠that is so obviously rendered. The ââ¬Å"shoeâ⬠is all form of oppression and constriction, though throughout the poem there is a strong sense of male domination and patriarchal oppression. ââ¬Å"Of the poems that Sylvia Plathââ¬â¢s Poems Page -3- concentrate on the family, those dealing with the father provide the clearest and most powerful example of Plathââ¬â¢s divided conception of the universe. â⬠(Rosenblatt 119) That said, the poem gains its most sinister and perhaps most powerful energies from deeply autobiographical confession. Lines such as ââ¬Å"In the waters off beautiful Nauset. /I used to pray to recover you. â⬠can only be interpreted as personal motifs, since Plath summered in Nauset with her family and often referred to this time period as the most gloriously happy in her life. Memory, in the poem, is like the child remembers: ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠brilliantly enlarges the memory of Plathââ¬â¢s father to legendary proportions. ââ¬Å"Plath dramatizes the situation between daughter and father as if no time had passed since the fatherââ¬â¢s death: the emotional situation is still burning in her consciousness. â⬠(Rosenblatt 160) This constant tension between the ideal and the real ââ¬â the remembered and the present ââ¬â the child and the grown woman mirror the universal experiences of most people whether the specific biographical details are similar. In order to firmly establish the mythical impact of her private ââ¬Å"theaterâ⬠Plath employs heroic exaggeration via the imagery of the poem: While most of the geographical references in Plathââ¬â¢s poetry are to New England or England, ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠refers to San Francisco in the lines ââ¬Å"Ghastly statue with one gray toe / Big as a Frisco Seal / And a head in the freakish Atlantic. â⬠These lines identify the daddy in the poem as a colossus who stretches across America from the Atlantic to the Pacificââ¬âa colossus even larger than the one described in ââ¬Å"The Colossus. â⬠(ANO194) Similarly, Plath demonstrates that her personal life, as a focused theme for her thoroughly crafted poetry, attains a mythical stature in the process. This mythical resonance is prevalent in her poem ââ¬Å"medusa,â⬠which, while not as generally well-known as ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠is actually a complimentary piece to the more famous work, with Medusa providing the maternal aspect of the Sylvia Plathââ¬â¢s Poems Page -4- two parentally themed pieces: ââ¬Å"â⬠Medusaâ⬠corresponds in Plathââ¬â¢s work to ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠: both represent the search for freedom from parental figures. â⬠(Rosenblatt 127) If ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠drew upon events from Plathââ¬â¢s life and juxtaposed them with sweeping images drawn from world history, ââ¬Å"Medusaâ⬠presents a more directly mythological connotation. From the title, alone, the reader is set to expect a resonance with Greek myth. However, what ensues is an inversion of the technique employed in ââ¬Å"Daddy,â⬠which utilized a mathematically precise rhyme scheme and colloquial diction to elevate the personal to the status of myth. In ââ¬Å"Medusa,â⬠a well-known myth is used as a kind of ââ¬Å"anchorâ⬠by which the personal can be magnified and universally comprehended. Plath imagines her mother as the Medusa, capable of turning all who look at her into stone. ââ¬Å"â⬠Medusaâ⬠paints the portrait of a similar figure: she observes the speaker from across the Atlantic; she has a hideous head that can apparently turn the self to stone; and she wishes to hurt the speaker. â⬠(Rosenblatt 127) One of the most interesting images in the poem is that of the Atlantic cable viewed by the poet as a ââ¬Å"barnacled umbilicusâ⬠which keeps her tied to the ââ¬Å"stoneâ⬠world of Medusa with its ââ¬Å"God-ball,/Lens of merciesâ⬠and Medusaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"stoogesâ⬠following the poet ââ¬Å"Dragging their Jesus hair. â⬠This image also allows the infusion of biographical details, as in ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠and in nearly all of the ââ¬Å"Arielâ⬠poems, as functional a part of the aesthetic as meter, rhyme, and diction. ââ¬Å"The reference in the poem to the umbilical attachment between the poet and Medusa identifies this figure as the mother. In this poem, Plath conjoins her first suicide attempt with the Biblical story of Lazarus. Hence, the use of rain in war setting is ironic. Hemingway also has manipulated this technique. The weather has been related to the war and human moo ds. Catherine Berkley is so afraid of rain that she thinks that the rain would part them from each other. She gets assurance from Henry that rain would not mitigate his love for him. A History of Violence has an interesting technique. Most violent movies have a steady stream of violence spread throughout the film. Occasionally the violence will go over the top in an attempt to shock the audience, but the shock effect usually isn't strong. When the audience knows violence is coming, they can be somewhat prepared for it whether it is mild or extremely graphic. Peter Suschitzky's cinematography is definitely the b... Peter Suschitzky's cinematography is definitely the best. Colors come out rich and bright and brilliant; images are sharp, concise and clear, black's are dark and contrast comes out as it should; this is because Cronenberg and Director of Photography Peter Suschitzky have used a 27mm lens. A standard lens is 50mm focal length, so 27mm is very much a wide angle lens. To create 'normal' framings, the camera has to be placed closer and care is needed to avoid distortion. The effect is unnerving although a scene looks conventional, it feels wide of the mark SOUND English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby stereo soundtracks are presented. The 5.1 makes great use of the set up as needed. Music comes through in all speakers but doesn't overwhelm. Sound effects come through sharply as does the dialogue, mostly pumped through the center channel. There was no noticeable distortion anywhere. New Line has presented a fine audio mix to accompany a fine video transfer. Sound adds life to the story as to signify the intense feeling of the characters, and the extremes of every scene, especially the extremely distressing violence. ASSESSMENT While it's just right, the film skillfully draws its audience into the graphic nature of violence and the way it later affects the film's protagonists. Some people might ignore the drama developed by Tom's actions, but Cronenberg handles the drama in such a way that is very effective; it doesn't come across as melodramatic. Everyone closely associated to Tom is changed or, at the very least, forced to look the consequences of their actions. Guidelines for Short Term Certificate Courses Essay Short Term Vocational Certificate Courses of Three months, Six months and One year duration are being introduced in the disciplines of Agriculture, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Business Commerce, Home Science and Humanities, with the objective of providing training to SSC failed/passed students or candidates who are interested in acquiring job oriented skills and wish to join the world of work, to enable them to earn their livelihood. (Course details at AnnexureI . These courses are being introduced as self-financing courses. HOW TO APPLY 1. Any Private Institution / NGO having good track record in the field of providing training and having required infrastructure can start these Short Term Vocational Courses with the approval from the State Institute of Vocational Education, after they satisfy the norms prescribed herein. 2. Application forms can be obtained from the concerned District Vocational Educational Officers or from the office of the Director of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad by paying Rs. 100/- through Demand Draft in favour of Secretary, Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh, Nampally, Hyderabad or can be down loaded from BIE website at: www. bieap. gov. in under ââ¬Å"vocational coursesâ⬠pages 3. At the time of filing application the institute should provide information on class room infrastructure, On the Job Training linkage, faculty, Society registration or Certificate of incorporation, track record in the field of training opted for and tie up for placements of trained candidates. 4. Maximum number of sections permitted for any institution will be 9 only, of different durations. A minimum of two courses should be offered from different disciplines. 5. The filled in application along with all enclosures should be submitted to the concerned District Vocational Educational Officer before the prescribed date. An Inspection Fee of Rs. 500/= in case of Rural area and Rs. 1000/= in case of an Urban area, in the form of a demand Draft in favour of the 3 Secretary, BIE in any Nationalized Bank, payable at Hyderabad is to be enclosed. SANCTION PROCEDURE 6. At the time of applying for Short Term Vocational Courses the Institute should indicate the Industry / Workshops / Service Organisations in which On the Job Training will be provided. They should furnish the MOU with the training establishment along with the application. FEE PARTICULARS: 9. The Private Institution / NGO should pay Rs. 500/- per section per module as recognition fee through Demand Draft in favour of the Secretary, Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh, Nampally, Hyderabad after approval from the State Institute of Vocational Education. Geographical and Cultural Overview of the US Stephanie Cheah Introduction: The USA plays a very big role in our daily lives. Everything that we do is somehow connected to the United States, from our smartphones, to the value of money in our wallets, and even the laptop this project is being typed on. In this paper, all aspects of the United States will be explored. Its physical geography, population, industry, role as a superpower, and issues that they are facing. The USA is a very prominent country not only in the areas mentioned above, but in its physical size and population. Being the third largest country in the world in land mass and the third largest country in population, the USA has a very diverse society. They are also the leaders in many aspects of our lives, practically controlling our lives across the globe. 1. The physical features of the USA The USA covers 3.806 million sq miles (9.857 million kmà ²). It is the third largest country in the world, after Russia and its neighbours Canada. Relief The eastern part of the USA is low and flat, excluding the Appalachian Mountains, which are low rounded highlands. The western half is much higher, with more mountain ranges running down from Alaska to Mexico. The Central Plains are gently rolling plains, and the Great Plains are slightly higher. Both combined form an important farming region for cattle and crops such as wheat, corn and soyabean. Mountains There are four major mountains in the United States: the Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Cascade Range, and the Sierra Nevada. The Rocky Mountains: They run 3000 miles from western Canada to the state of New Mexico. They also include numerous sub ranges, such as the Wasatch, Bitterroots, Big Horn, and Front Ranges. The Appalachian Mountains: Situated in the eastern United States, they stretch from Alabama northeast across New England, and extending up to Canada. The Cascades: The Cascade Range along the West Coast of the United States extend from Canada into the US states of Washington, Oregon, and California. These mountains were formed as part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and have volcanoes, including Mount St. Helens and Lassen. Sierra Nevada The Sierra Nevada mountains, located in the states of California and Nevada, are about 400 miles long. The name Sierra Nevada is Spanish for snowy mountains, because of the snow-capped peaks of the range. Many of the mountains are formed of granite, and shaped by glaciers. The tallest mountain in the United States in Mt McKinley, at 20,320 feet, in the Alaska range. Rivers There are approximately 250,000 rivers, adding up to about 3,500,000 miles (or 5,632,704km) of rivers. The Missouri (a tributary of the Mississippi River) is the longest river in the USA which is 2540 miles (4088km) long. In terms of volume, the Mississippi River is largest. Together they form the fourth longest river in the world, which is almost 7000km long. The longest undammed river is the Yellowstone river, which is 692 miles (1113km) long. Lakes The Great Lakes are the largest group of lakes in the world. Four of them are shared with Canada. 2. USAââ¬â¢s climate As USA has a large land mass, it has a wide range of climates. In Alaska, much of the land is tundra, and where it is not, it is cold and drier. At the south as well as Hawaii, there is tropical climate, meaning that it has warm summers and mild winters. In the south west, it is mostly desert, which are made out of stony soil and low shrubs. The Sonoran is the hottest, but it has cool winters. Large land masses heat up fast in summer and cool fast in winter. The further inland you go, the more drastic the temperature difference will be between summer and winter. Climate Regions There are nine climate regions in the USA: Central, East North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South, Southeast, Southwest, West and West North Central. Below is a diagram of the average temperatures: The west side of the country is the coldest, while the south is much warmer. The hottest states are in the South and East North Central. 2. Population of USA The USA has a population of approximately 324,490,000 people. There has been a fast but steady increase in the population of the USA over 25 years. This is comprised out of many diverse ethnicities which are shown in the diagrams below. Racial/Ethnic Mix Over 25 years, there has been an increase of approximately 53,000 people in the total population. The USA has seen a rise the general non-white population, with the exception of the Indian population, which has remained constant throughout the 25 years, and the ââ¬Å"Otherâ⬠category, which saw a decrease from 2005 to 2015. White remains the ethnicity with the largest population, while the Hispanic population is the second largest. For the convenience of the reader, a pie chart has been created to illustrate the above statistics. 3. Population Distribution The Eastern side of the USA is more densely populated compared to the west. However, it is rather densely populated along the west coast, as shown in the diagram above. The most densely populated cities are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Philadelphia. Possible reasons to why these cities are more densely populated are: Their geographic locations make it a suitable place to trade and live comfortably. The most populous cities in the US are located near a body of water, have a (preferably) mild climate and easy access to natural resources. Water was the easiest way to transport goods before the Industrial Revolution, and it also allowed the movement of ideas. It also made it easier for immigrants to arrive there, considering their mode of transport was also water. 4. The automotive industry Henry Ford was the man who started up Americaââ¬â¢s automotive industry. Although he did not invent the motor car, he was the first to set up a factory producing low-cost cars that virtually anyone could afford. His first fatory was in Detroit, Michigan. He picked a good pace to set up his first factory. Detroit is located in an area known as the ââ¬Ëmanufacturing beltââ¬â¢. This place had lots of steel works, an abundance of workers, and a large number of nearby customers. He started with the Ford Model T, which was launched on 1 October 1908. It soon gained popularity, and sold 15 million Model Ts across the world. Mr Henry Ford was keen on globalisation as well. Within 20 years of opening his first factory, he set up plants in the UK, Canada, France, India, Germany and Australia. However, the American car industry is not experiencing the same success it did years ago. The Big Three American companies: Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, are selling less and less cars, mostly due to competition from other foreign car companies. The downfall started in the 1970s, when there were too many cars and the USAââ¬â¢s oil deposits were being used up and oil had to be imported. US car companies continues to lose money when Japan began to export smaller and cheaper cars to the USA. Now with even more cars on the road, it increases the air pollution and there is pressure to come up with cars that limit carbon emissions, by creating cars that run on fuel other than petrol. 5. Agriculture industry The USA is the worldââ¬â¢s top exporter and the most productive in the history of the world. Thanks to the USAââ¬â¢s large land mass and range of climates, many crops are able to grow there. The two main crops grown there are wheat and corn, and rearing livestock also brings a lot of business. What makes the American farmers so productive is the fact that they have plenty of fertile flat land, which is suitable for growing crops and the usage of large machinery. Apart from this, there are large mechanised farms which often specialise in only one type of crop. They also use chemicals such as fertilisers to aid the plantââ¬â¢s growth. increase the yield and pesticides to protect the crops. They also lead in crop research. Through genetic modification, scientists have developed plants that can grow in a hostile environment. Lastly, the US government pays subsidies to farmers to encourage them. California is also famous for farming. It produces all types of fruit and vegetables, including grapes. Rearing cattle and selling milk is also big business, as well as growing rice and cotton. However, there is a huge debate going on about what Americaââ¬â¢s limited water should be used for. As 11% of Americaââ¬â¢s cropland depends on irrigation, it means that it takes up a lot of water. In fact, it takes up half of the USAââ¬â¢s water consumption. 6. The American Dream The American Dream is a belief that everyone in the USA has an equal chance to succeed regardless of their ethnicity or their background. This is what has led thousands of people over to the USA. Many people are drawn to the USA as there is not only the belief of the American Dream, but there is opportunity there. They go there for better education for their children. Most go there to find work, whether they are highly-skilled, or if they lack education and are willing to work hard and build a better life. Here is an example of an American Dream that did come true: ââ¬Å"Ursula Burns The CEO ofXeroxfaced numerous struggles to arrive atop that company. Raised by a single mother a Panamanian immigrant in a New York City housing project, she attended parochial school and discovered an aptitude for math and figures. While she was pointed by teachers toward a traditional womans career such as nursing, she made another calculation: What high-paying work was available with the degree she knew she could get in math or science? She attended Polytechnic Institute of New York and Columbia University with that in mind.â⬠Unfortunately, while the American Dream does come true for some, others arenââ¬â¢t as lucky. Thousands who arrive from their native countries migrate in the hopes of getting a better education or occupation, but the only thing they are met with is homelessness. To quote the New York Times: ââ¬Å"Oscar was a shy 15-year-old when his parents hired a local ââ¬Ëcoyoteââ¬â¢ in July 2008 to help him leave Veracruz, Mexico, and cross the border to seek work in the United States. Jorge, gregarious, bright-eyed and also 15, gathered up his 6-year-old cousin six months later and left Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in the middle of the night, to escape abuse that he said had escalated into fistfights with his father. He also planned to work and send money back to his mother. Without knowing it, both were headed toward homelessness. In that, they joined thousands of other immigrant children who have left their native country ââ¬â for work, family reunification or refuge ââ¬â crossed into the United States and wound up alone.â⬠Is the American Dream just a fantasy? Or is it something that is real, and we know will definitely come to us? I find that both statements are wrong. The Dream is very much alive, but like it is, after all, still a dream. Not all dreams will come true. 7. Physical Geography of California The state of California covers a land area of 163,973 square miles and 7,734 square miles of water. California is the third largest state in the US and has over 1,200 miles of coastline. There are three major mountain ranges in California: the Klamath Mountains, Cascade Mountains and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. To the south-east extreme of California is the Mojave Desert which covers over 25,000 square miles of Californian territory. Vegetation is sparse and most of the region is at an elevation of more than 2,000 feet above sea level. The Central Valley is long, flat and sheltered, and the Death Valley is the hottest part of the Mojave Desert, which can reach temperatures up to 50à °C in the summer. Most of California enjoys mild climate and equitable rainfall. The coastal regions can get rather cold in winter months. The desert regions are low on rainfall and the temperature soars up to 130à °F (54à °C). The cities of Los Angeles and San Diego have average temperatures ranging between 50à °F (10à °C)and 60à °F (15à °C) and are very pleasant. This area is also affected by the presence of many earthquake causing fault lines. The San Andreas Fault, running through California, is a major fault line. 8. Issues the USA is facing Environmental Issues Due to the USA being located where two plates meet, the west coast is prone to earthquakes and volcano eruptions. On the south east side, hurricanes often occur, as it is near to the Atlantic Ocean. Tornadoes are also a frequent occurrence, especially in spring and summer. In addition to this, droughts are common throughout the whole of the USA. This is caused by low rainfall, which also leads to wildfires. To make matters worse, people have been pumping too much water from rivers and aquifers. Social issues While the American Dream is based on the idea that everyone has an equal chance, one aspect is certainly false. According to the statistics, far more non-whites have been arrested and persecuted. Studies have shown that a non-white person (eg. Black, Hispanic) was more likely to be stopped and frisked. In New York City, 80% of the stops made were blacks and Latinos, and 85% of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8% of white people stopped. In the year 2010, it was reported by the US Sentencing Commission that whites faced a 10% shorter sentence compared to their black counterparts. While these numbers could possibly be justified as the non-white community happening to commit more crime, it should not be that a survey in 2011 revealed that 52% of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. Although one may argue that the first black president, Barack Obama, was elected in 2009, this does nothing to disguise the fact that coloured people are still facing discrimination against them. Economic Issues The US no longer produce what we need to sustain themselves. Instead, they import much more than they export. As they are not making enough profit, they take on colossal debts to maintain their high standard of living. The US does not acknowledge that other countries are undermining them. For example, Chinaââ¬â¢s currency manipulation has cost the U.S. millions of jobs. Instead we encourage U.S. manufacturers to design, engineer, and produce in third world markets like Mexico and China, making the problem even worse. 9. The USA as a superpower Why is it a superpower? The United States of America is not only a powerful nation economically; it is also one in the fields of science and technology. The USA receives the highest number of immigrants per year (approximately 1 million), a leader in technology, business, movies and tertiary education. It has the highest GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in the entire world, almost twice that of the next highest. However, the United States of America is a huge spender, particularly on their military. They also spend the most of the worldââ¬â¢s military spending, almost half of the total. The USAââ¬â¢s powerful military contributes largely to them being a superpower. During the two World Wars, there was a struggle for power, initially with the European ââ¬Å"great powersâ⬠such as the United Kingdom, Russians, Austria-Hungary to name a few, then to one global empire (Great Britain), Japan, and currently the United States. After World War II, two superpowers emerged: the United States and the Soviet Union. They were both so heavily armed that engaging in direct war with each other could possibly destroy our civilisation. They also have a huge influence on our modern culture. They are the leaders for entertainment such as television shows, movies, music, food, fashion and plenty other things.
